Kota Kinabalu: A 27-year-old Bruneian was fined RM10,000 in default 60 days’ jail for staying in the State after his passport had expired.

Sessions Court Judge Norhafizah Mohd Salim meted out the sentence to Md Norazwan Md Anarul Adelludin, who pleaded guilty to the charge against him.Norazwan was found overstaying in the State for more than six months after his passport had expired on Nov 13, 2023.SPONSORED CONTENT Electrifying windows of opportunity in Sabah - The right policies, collaborations, and strategies can turn emerging opportunities into victories for all parties in Sabah .

The offence under Section 15 of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which carries a fine of at least RM10,000, or a jail term of up to five years, or both, on conviction for staying in Malaysia beyond the period allowed.The court ordered Norazwan to be referred to the Immigration Department for further action.

During mitigation, Norazwan who was unrepresented told the court that he was currently unemployed and that he asked for a lower fine because he could not afford to pay high amount of fine.He said the incident gave him a lesson and was traumatised as well as mentally unstable since being arrested and remanded.However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Shafeerah Mad Iskim urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.
