Created by Sam Raimi, the horror movie franchise centers around various young people who discover the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, an ancient book conjuring up demonic spirits that possess those within its proximity and turn them into violent beings known as Deadites. Campbell starred in the original trilogy of movies and the TV sequel show Ash vs.
Well, they think that you're the movies that you're in. They think that you love horror. So, I had a woman, a very goth woman, come up at a signing, and she gave me a book of poetry that she wrote. She goes, “Here's something you’ll really like.” I started to read it, and it was the most disturbing, offensive words and meaning. I couldn't read a full page of it.
In addition to his Raimi collaborations, Campbell has lent his talents to an array of other genres, though generally bringing with him a tongue-in-cheek approach to his roles. Some include his turn as an aging Elvis Presley fighting an evil mummy in the horror-comedy Bubba Ho-Tep, the powerful high school teacher Coach Boomer in Disney's Sky High and the charismatic retired Navy SEAL Sam Axe in Burn Notice.
When it comes to the Evil Dead franchise, Campbell remains very involved in future projects, producing every new installment alongside Raimi and Rob Tapert. In addition to recently reprising Ash for Evil Dead: The Game, he's indicated plans for an animated revival of the show following its cancellation in 2018, while also expressing an openness to star in a live-action movie should Raimi be at the helm, despite Campbell's previous retirement from the character.
