Speaking of pitching, have Bruce Bochy and the Rangers solved their biggest problem?
“If I had to pick one [area], I’d say good pitching; the starters have been really doing a nice job,” Bochy said Tuesday beforedominated the A’s on three hits for seven innings. “They’ve given us those quality starts, and if it doesn’t qualify as a quality start, they are still going six innings and allowing us to use the bullpen like we want to. So, I’ll start there because that got away from us in the early part of July.
On Wednesday, Scherzer continued the dominant August with seven innings against Oakland. He didn’t allow a hit until J.J. Bleday’s leadoff homer in the fourth. He allowed two other singles, then left after seven, ending the night with a great fielding play on a swinging bunt and then an animated conversation with home plate umpire Dan Iassogna. The rotation’s August results: A 2.36 ERA for August, best in the majors. They’ve cut down on walks and increased their strikeout rate.
The All-Star break, regular off days that followed and the additions of Scherzer and Montgomery have refreshed the Rangers starters. It’s allowed them to go six innings more regularly. When the starters get through six innings, the bullpen sets up well with Sborz or recently-acquired Chris Stratton in the seventh, Aroldis Chapman in the eighth and Will Smith in the ninth.
