When Browns new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz takes the practice field for the first time this spring, he’ll undoubtedly hear Bill Belichick’s voice ringing in his ears.
When Schwartz eventually took over as head coach of the Lions from 2009-13, where he went 29-51 but guided them to a 10-6 record and playoff berth three years after their 0-16 season in 2008, he harkened back to his second year in Cleveland when the Browns went 11-5 and 1-1 in the playoffs.
Belichick came through again for Schwartz again when he called former Titans head coach Jeff Fisher in 1999 and encouraged him to hire the young Ravens’ defensive assistant. “ said, ‘I think there’s a good chance I could lose Greg Williams, so he’s really going to be my next coordinator.’ So went from being pretty much a graduate assistant-type position in Baltimore to defensive coordinator practically in one year,” Belichick said. “That’s kind of the way Jim is. You give him something to do, and he’ll do a great job of it.”
The Eagles defensive coordinator from 2016-2020, Schwartz beat his mentor 41-33 in Super Bowl LII after the 2017 season, one in which his defense allowed the fewest rushing yards per game in the NFL, ranked third in third-down defense and produced the fourth-most takeaways . In the playoffs, the defense allowed only 10 points in the Divisional Round and seven points in the NFC Championship.
“If you do something he doesn’t like, that’s when you’re really going to see Jim get red with spit coming out of his mouth,” cornerback Leodis McKelvin, who played for Schwartz in Buffalo and Philly, told The Philadelphia Inquirer in 2016. “But that’s the type of coach you love playing for. If a coach is being straight with you and not showing you no kind of shade, you want to give a guy like that your all.
With the Browns having discipline issues on defense throughout the 2022 season, Schwartz will lay down the law in the meeting rooms too.
