The game was a good one -- maybe the Browns at their best so far this year. But Cleveland’s problems aren’t exactly solved. Far from it, actually, writes Ashley Bastock.
But Cleveland’s problems aren’t exactly solved. Far from it, actually.
Unsurprisingly given the season so far, there were still special teams issues on Monday. Cade York had a 53-yard field goal attempt blocked in the first half due to a whiffed block upfront. A failed attempt at a trick play in the first quarter led to Cooper throwing an interception. For as solid as Brissett’s stats were, he still lost a key fumble that luckily didn’t lead to a Cincy score. The Browns got two takeaways but couldn’t turn them into points. Six penalties cost Cleveland 56 yards.
After a game like this one, it doesn’t feel like that’s necessarily the case, at least not anymore. But Cleveland has three more games to prove that its identity isn’t waiting for Watson to come back -- rather, that its identity is trying to scrap wins to hand the quarterback a team with something still to play for.
Sure, it’s important for players especially to get some time off during the bye week. But heading into the next 13 or so days, Kevin Stefanski and his staff should be fine-tuning what they have here now. Figure out what worked best on Monday night, how they can continue to maximize their defensive personnel and Chubb especially, for the time being. Continue to look for ways for Brissett to game manage while minimizing mistakes.
