San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins held a solid lead over three challengers as initial election results were posted on Tuesday night.
If she holds on, the victory would punctuate a remarkable political rise for Jenkins, who until last year was a relatively unknown assistant district attorney. She quit that job in October to help lead the recall campaign against her former boss, District Attorney Chesa Boudin.
Aside from Jenkins herself, the politician with perhaps the most at stake in the race was Mayor London Breed. First, it was revealed in August that Jenkins was paid more than $100,000 for consulting work by an organization with close ties to the recall effort. The revelation called into question whether Jenkins was truly a volunteer for the recall campaign, as she claimed then and now, or if she was effectively a paid political operative.
