Former San Diego State standout had handful of coaching mentors, Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn the most prominent among them
“You spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.”Brock Ungricht pulled a baseball from his back pocket late Friday night after USD’s season-opening victory against Oregon.
USD Athletic Director Bill McGillis conducted a nationwide search for Hill’s replacement before promoting Ungricht. Added USD shortstop Cody Jefferis: “He’s pretty calm, very collected. He’s got a great way of doing it. ... He knows when to enjoy it and have fun, too. It definitely helps me, and it helps everyone else.”
Both Martinez and Gwynn saw a future coach in their midst, although Ungricht didn’t want to hear it at the time. Ungricht spent a season as head coach at Kearny High, guiding the 2009 Komets to their first league title in 28 years.“Come to my office tomorrow morning,” Ungricht remembers Gwynn saying. “I want to sit down and go over your first day on the job.”
“That was pretty cool after testing the waters at first trying to learn about my swing from a Hall of Famer about his philosophy on hitting.” Two years were spent scouting for the St. Louis Cardinals before joining Hill’s staff as hitting coach and recruiting coordinator.“He absorbs a lot of things in his brain,” said Dan Ungricht, Brock’s father. “You tell him something and it’s just like a filing cabinet up there.”Marquess, who was notable for carrying a briefcase with him into postgame press conferences, Ungricht noted, was “disciplined, tough, prepared, organized, so you’re going into every practice or game ready to rock and roll.
