David Stuart Armitage, wanted for the murder of Lamduan Seekanya, was apprehended in Thailand after fleeing the UK. The case, which began with the discovery of an unidentified woman's body in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, was finally solved through DNA analysis and international cooperation.
A British man wanted for the murder of his Thai wife in 2004 has been arrested in Thailand and is facing extradition back to the UK. David Stuart Armitage, 62, was apprehended by the Thai Immigration Bureau and the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) on Thursday, January 23rd. Armitage had fled the UK and resided in Thailand for an extended period, according to the DSI investigation.
His arrest brings to an end a two-decade-long investigation into the mysterious death of Lamduan Seekanya, a Thai woman from Udon Thani province, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The case began in 2004 when the body of an unidentified woman was found in the mountains of the Yorkshire Dales. Local residents dubbed her the 'Lady of the Hills' as her identity remained unknown. Despite police appeals, no one came forward to claim her. The woman was buried in a village cemetery near the discovery site. Ten years later, a new investigative team took over the cold case, hoping to solve the long-standing mystery. They theorized that the woman could be a 'Thai-bride type', a common trend in the 1990s and early 2000s, where Thai or Southeast Asian women married foreigners and moved to the UK. The initial assumption was that her acquaintances believed she had returned to Thailand, leading to no reports of her disappearance. Investigators speculated that she may have been killed at her residence and her body transported to the remote valley to conceal the crime. Forensic analysis played a crucial role in identifying the woman. Tissue samples, bones, and teeth were sent for analysis, revealing that she was Southeast Asian and contained isotopes specific to South Cumbria and the northern tip of Lancashire. This narrowed down the possible origins and residence of the woman in the UK. Following a request for information from Thai authorities, the woman was identified as Lamduan Seekanya from Udon Thani. She had married a British man and moved to live with him in the UK. Lamduan had initially sent money home and consulted her family about physical abuse from her husband. The UK police then coordinated with forensic institutes to collect DNA samples from her relatives for comparison with the DNA of the 'woman of the hills'. After her identity was confirmed, British media investigated her husband's role in her disappearance. At that time, he had relocated to Thailand and was working as a language instructor at a university. Armitage was arrested under the Immigration Act and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act between Thailand and the United Kingdom, pending further legal proceedings and extradition to the UK
