It is the first time a UK government has blocked a Scottish law since the Scottish government and parliament were established.
The British government is set to block a bill passed by the Scottish parliament that makes it easier for people to change their legal gender — the first time it has invoked the power to veto a Scottish law.
"I have not taken this decision lightly," Mr Jack said in a statement, adding it would "have a significant impact" on equalities matters across Britain.Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called the decision by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative government "a full-frontal attack" on the Scottish parliament, which approved the bill last month.
She said such a decision "will be using trans people — already one of the most vulnerable, stigmatised groups in our society — as a political weapon."The Scottish bill allows people aged 16 or older in Scotland to change the gender designation on their identity documents by self-declaration, removing the need for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria.
