As another Australia Day passes and we debate our past, present and future, an exhibition of 100 images of Queensland’s capital from the past 200 years offers Brisbanites the chance to think.sits in the Museum of Brisbane in City Hall, competing for attention as families rush past to tour the clock tower.
Stephanie Taylor from Brisbane on Highgate Hill in a scene replicating the view of Brisbane depicted in Englishman William Bustard’s oil painting from 1928.Almost 100 years later former Sydneysider Stephanie Taylor stands in the same spot. Today tall buildings blot out the river, the Victoria Bridge and City Hall.
“The feeling is that he has seen images, and he has transposed them. So, he is obviously not painting what he saw of Brisbane.”Bustard’s sense of “Brisbane place” had been recreated second-hand, Clark said, a reminder as the exhibition notes that: “Artists are often not drawn by accuracy when interpreting place.”as a relaxed, idyllic sliver of lawn with boats, the Spring Hill Windmill, the Commissariat Store and other early buildings.
Drama students Peyton Ryder and Leef Hirst say there is no way they could identify that modern Brisbane began on the opposite shores of the river.“Looking over there, you can tell the difference between the new stuff and the old stuff, but now that we know that’s where it started, you couldn’t figure it out before,” Ryder said.
Today, a plaque nominates the site as where explorer John Oxley may have landed to look for water from swamps at either Milton, near City Hall, or at North Quay. The windmill tower at Spring Hill, built in 1828, has been revealed as the site of Brisbane’s first public executions.Notes describe Indigenous people in 1841 attacking surveyors near Mount Lindsay and later being hanged at the windmill.
