The Freedom Fest kicked off Friday night and runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today (Saturday). We went to the festival Friday night to see what kind of fun you can get in to downtown:
Visitors to the fest on Friday evening braved brisk temperatures for the middle of June. Jackets, hats and hoods were worn to fight off the stiff northwest wind blowing off of Lake Erie.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally-celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery, on June 19, 1865. That date marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that all enslaved people were free, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.
