Meteorologists are forecasting a heat spike on Thursday, with conditions nearing record-breaking levels.
Brisbanites are set to swelter through near-record-breaking heat on Thursday, but experts say it will be shortlived.
“[It’s] definitely notable ... very much above average max temperature,” warned Bureau of Meteorology’s Kimba Wong. A high of 35 degrees was forecast for Brisbane - 9 degrees above the average September maximum of 25.6 degrees. The actual temperature observed on Thursday may drop slightly, depending on sea breezes.
“The last time we had a temperature this high was in March earlier this year, we had 36.6 [degrees] ... [it was] a very hot day,” the senior meteorologist toldIpswich was expected to bear the brunt of the warmth, with a high of 37 degrees brought on by northwesterly winds across Queensland. The warm conditions, however, would be shortlived, with a 10-degree temperature drop overnight on Friday as a trough system crossed the state. While it wouldn’t be Brisbane’s hottest day on record for the year -“The record for September is 37 degrees in 2017,” Wong explained.
