Already a subscriber?Brisbane’s Olympics organisers have dumped a plan to demolish and rebuild the historic Gabba cricket ground as the heart of the 2032 Games, and also rejected a review panel’s proposal to build a new $3 billion stadium.
Suncorp Stadium general manager Alan Graham, Queensland Premier Steven Miles and rugby league great Wally Lewis. Miles announced Suncorp would host the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. The review, released on Monday, said the Gabba’s rebuild may cost closer to $3.4 billion and that a better investment would be realised at a former Brisbane golf course in Victoria Park. But Mr Miles rejected that.
“It was increasingly becoming an election issue for the Brisbane City Council elections and was clearly going to be for the state election in October. Perhaps we should have all said earlier ‘This just isn’t going to work. The public’s not going to take it.’ But we didn’t.” Mr Miles said Suncorp Stadium – which currently seats 52,500 – was well-connected to public transport and was already the busiest venue.

A further 33 per cent of commuters will be of the same duration on more efficient routes, while 13 per cent of bus commuters will have slightly slower bus trips, but have more suburban buses. Under the LNP’s $1.4 billion Brisbane Metro plan, the 60 three-car mega buses will collect passengers from suburban hubs - such as this one at University of Queensland -and carry them through the CBD on a five-minute frequency. At the 19 Brisbane Metro hubs, the suburban buses return to extra suburban bus services, while the passengers hop on to Metro rapid transit buses to travel every five minutes to the CBD
