Canadian writer and urbanist Charles Montgomery is bringing his blend of town planning and psychology as the city begins to reshape.
A decade later,
“The big question is, as we are building denser cities, and we are building more housing, how can we build multi-family housing that actually works as a ‘relationship machine’, or a ‘friendship machine’,” he says. “My building has 25 households. But it is not just that. We built common spaces and amenities spaces in our building,” he says.
“My point is we can design this into our neighbourhoods, into our buildings. We don’t have to have these lines of urban and suburban disconnection.Vancouver, like Brisbane, is exploring the concept of a different mix of accommodation for the fewer traditional family units in the city.“We have just passed a law that will enable property owners to build up to six homes on a property where there currently stands a detached house,” Montgomery says.
“For the longest time we just built apartments along noisy, polluted arterial routes. We treated renters poorly. We’d build a wall to protect them from noise and traffic. “I am not being facetious. The World Values Surveys regularly poll people around the world and asks them two questions: one about happiness and another question about them to rate their own wellbeing.”, Australia was viewed as the world’s 11th happiest place to live and Canada the 14th.
