First word AS the nation searches today for another sport to banner its bid to enter the international sports limelight, I would like to tender this modest proposal for the nation to make pool sports the vehicle for this laudable aspiration of Filipino sports officials and enthusiasts. As a nation of over 110 million people, it is indeed time for the nation to register its numbers in the world of sports.

Under this plan, the Republic should bid with the World Pool-Billiard Association , the world's governing body for pool, for the sanction or right to organize and host one major world pool championship tournament in the country next year or in 2025. Our government no less should offer a guarantee for the successful holding and funding of a prestigious tournament by joining the private sector in this program.

One poll survey firm came up with a research finding that the three most popular sports in the country are the three Bs; boxing because of Manny Pacquiao and his unmatched boxing titles in different pound divisions; billiards because of Efren Reyes; and basketball, because of the Filipinos' undying love of the sport. The citation of billiards in the mix is striking, because pool is still not part of the Olympic program up to now.
