After being mocked across the country, House Bill 1134 has been neutered to the point of giving parents same power they always had with schools.
, and for Democrats and teachers to accept a win over legislation they’re not thrilled about, but which also would not cause many practical changes.of HB 1134 would have caused all the problems that educators feared, given that the bill’s language was vague enough to leave discretion for schools to create their own interpretations. But the Rogers amendment leaves no ambiguity.
To be clear, parents have always had the option to participate in learning with their children. Some take advantage of opportunities to talk to teachers and some don’t. If there’s a benefit to the past several months of school board fights and legislative debates, it could be to remind parents that they can and should find out what’s happening in classrooms and talk to teachers about it.
“This proposal is basically saying you would have to use what they call a , Canvas or Google Classroom or something along those lines. That’s something we already do,” Roth said. “So, for us, parents have a lot of access to be able to see what their kids are doing. There’s a feature in Google Classroom where parents can be invited to join the classroom, so they can see what’s going on and what’s being posted. Right now, not all of our teachers use that function.
