The Assembly member and candidate for city attorney decried the questions raised by his campaign rival, calling them politically driven

But City Attorney Mara Elliott plans to follow through on plans to seek an independent legal analysis of the Assemblymember’s eligibility, as he denounces questions as reckless political gamesmanship.

But “just because you may be eligible to run doesn’t make you qualified to serve, and as a career politician who hasn’t practiced law in decades, Maienschein is clearly completely unqualified,” Rottenstreich said by email. Rottenstreich said Thursday that he would not be surprised if a San Diego constituent filed a legal challenge to the Maienschein campaign.

Sutton previously challenged the legal eligibility for Xavier Becerra to serve as California attorney general. The case was not successful.
