The message, however, comes in a context. The British people were Brexit exhausted, three and a half years after they had voted by a narrow margin to get out of the EU. Thus Get Brexit Done appealed.
Just like Pakatan Harapan’s victories in 2018 in constituencies that have never known any representative other than from Umno. The greater difficulty is how to address the cultural basis of the vote for Brexit. Getting back sovereignty is easy enough: the EU and its bureaucrats will not be “bossing” the UK around any more. But “we want our country back” is not easy to satisfy because it contains a knot of issues which would expose Britain to international opprobrium if the manner it is unravelled is unjust. It is not just about taking a position in relation to the EU.
The Scottish Nationalist Party won 48 of the 59 seats contested in Scotland. The SNP is an avowedly Remain in the EU party. It also is committed to having another referendum on Scottish independence. The third challenge is how to bring the British people together again. Johnson struck a magnanimous note on this in one of his first reactions to his big election victory.
