At the age of 19, Mr. Santos was in Rio de Janeiro, where his Brazilian mother, Fatima Devolder, was working as a nurse for a man named Délio Alemão, who had entrusted her with his checkbook, according to court records. Mr. Santos took two of the blank checks to buy some $1,300 worth of goods at a clothing store, including a pair of sneakers, as presents for his friend, according to court documents and the police.
While Rio de Janeiro prosecutors charged Mr. Santos at the time for check fraud, the case didn’t advance after police failed to locate Mr. Santos for questioning.whose reporting brought Mr. Santos’s fabrications to light, also reported that prosecutors planned to reopen the check-cashing case.
