The court found that Apple is using a ‘green initiative’ as an excuse to impose on ‘consumers a required purchase of charger adapters' 👀 Apple Brazil TechNave
A Brazilian court has fined Apple BRL100 million or ~RM89 million in “social damages” for its continued practice of selling iPhones without a charger in the country. The tech giant was slapped with the fine by a Sao Paulo state court, which stressed that Apple must offer battery chargers with iPhones that are sold in Brazil.
As reported by Reuters, the decision was made in a lawsuit brought about by the Brazilian association of borrowers, consumers and taxpayers . In its decision, the court did not take Apple’s environmental explanation for the chargers’ removal favourably, saying that Apple is using a ‘green initiative’ to impose on ‘the consumer a required purchase of charger adapters that were previously supplied along with the product’.
Besides the imposing of the BRL100 million fine, Apple has also been instructed by the court to provide chargers to all Brazilians who purchased their products after 13 October 2020. However, Apple is currently in the midst of appealing the ruling, thus will probably continue its practice of not including chargers with the iPhone in Brazil until the appeal is heard.
