As if the Mets’ offense wasn’t bad enough Friday, the final out of the bottom of the eighth inning happened without a pitch being thrown in their 3-0 loss.
Brandon Nimmo was called for a pitch-clock violation on a 2-2 count with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and Tim Mayza on the mound.Nimmo was determined to not be engaged with the pitcher by the eight-second mark of the pitch clock, ending the at-bat and the inning.
“It seems ticky-tack,’’ Nimmo said, pointing out that it came after a foul ball and he was in the batter’s box. “Usually, we get a little more time on foul balls. Maybe that’s been wrong.”“We had a really good hitter up there in a close game and the next thing you know, the inning’s over,’’ Showalter said.
Brandon Nimmo walks to the dugout at the end of the eighth inning after he was called out on a strike three for not being in the batter’s box in time in the Mets’ 3-0 loss to the Blue Jays.Reliever Jeff Brigham gave up a two-run homer to Daulton Varsho in the top of the ninth and the Mets couldn’t come back.
“It sucks that a situation in a game is dictated by something that wasn’t even in the game a year ago,’’ Nimmo said. “I’ve got to try to be more aware of the clock.” He blamed it in part on his tendency to let pitchers get on the rubber before he prepares to hit, which can create a close call with the clock.Share this article:
