“All the toys are being given to children of inmates at the Jefferson County and Birmingham City jails,” Theresa Strachan said about an upcoming toy drive featuring pro boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Professional boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be in Birmingham this weekend to help collect toys for children of Jefferson County inmates, said Birmingham concert promoter Theresa Strachan, president of the Dare 2 Care non-profit.
Mayweather, who owns a team in the NASCAR Cup Series called The Money Team Racing, is hosting the event on behalf of himself and The Money Team.“Celebrities always do charity events in big market cities,” Strachan said. “I explain to them the kids in smaller market cities have the same problems and needs as in the big cities.”
She’s previously done fundraising events with singers and rappers. Strachan said Mayweather can relate to the children of inmates because his father, former boxer Floyd Mayweather Sr., served five years in federal prison for convictions on drug trafficking. Mayweather, 45, won 15 major professional world championships as a super featherweight and light middleweight and in other categories, and has been one of the most lucrative pay-per-view fighters of all time.
