‘Sonic’ and ‘Bad Boys 3’ are the hits Paramount and Sony needed
, but it also means the pulpy thrillers and high-concept comedies that once brought audiences into theaters. When movie stars were the brands/franchises, Paramount and Sony thrived.
The demise, comparatively speaking, of the old-school star+concept studio programmer is what both caused the proverbial death of Hollywood originality and put Sony and Paramount on especially rocky ground. They built their legacy on star vehicles and adult-skewing originals, and helped turn the likes of Adam Sandler, Julia Roberts, Jim Carrey, Will Smith and Denzel Washington into bankable “face on the poster” movie stars.
