Disaster Strikes South African Town as Mine's Dam Wall CollapsesResidents of Jagersfontein in the Free State province woke to a devastating mudslide on Sunday, September 11, 2022 as a wall of a dam - part of a disused diamond mine once owned by global mining giant De Beers - collapsed. Authorities have said that one person has died, while several others are reported missing. Cars and houses were swept away and there are ongoing reports of extensive damage to infrastructure. Many residents have lost all their possessions as they escaped. De Beers sold the mine to the Superkolong Consortium in 2010. The damage is still being evaluated and President Cyril Ramaphosa will be paying a visit to the town today, Monday September 12, 2022. The disused mine is one of thousands abandoned in South Africa. Human Rights Watch has stated that a "combination of poor governance and business practices have left many communities living in their shadow".
