U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost called for greater 'consequences' for migrants caught crossing into the U.S. outside of designated ports of entry.

More people have been caught crossing into the U.S. illegally at the southern border this fiscal year than any year since 2009 "only seven months in," U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost told Congressmembers during a hearing on border security on Wednesday.

But, Provost said,"as of Sunday, only seven months into the year, we have now surpassed the total southwest border apprehensions of every fiscal year since 2009." Since March 19, Border Patrol has been directly releasing processed non-criminal family units from locations that are"dangerously over capacity." More than 30,000 people have been released to date, according to Provost.

"To address the flow of illegal immigration, there must be consequences for illegally crossing the border," she said.
