Victoria Police are working to identify a body pulled from Melbourne’s Yarra River overnight.

Emergency services were called to Southbank Boulevard, in Melbourne's Southbank entertainment precinct at about 7.30pm on Saturday night.

It is understood a member of the public raised the alarm after spotting a body floating in the Yarra River just metres from the busy Southbank nightlife area.A Victoria Police spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au that the body had “yet to be formally identified”. "The exact circumstances and cause of death are yet to be determined and police will prepare a report for the coroner,” they added.

The Yarra River flows 242 kilometres from its source on Mt Baw Baw in the Yarra Ranges National Park, north-east of Melbourne, before snaking through the city and emptying into Port Phillip Bay.
