The bodies of two Noorvik residents were found in the Kobuk River Saturday after they left Kotzebue in a skiff Thursday night but never arrived in their home community, Alaska State Troopers say.
The bodies of 43-year-old Henry Black and 40-year-old Diane Coffin were found in the Kobuk River on Friday evening after their skiff was located, overturned, in the river earlier that day, troopersMonday. They were reported overdue earlier that day after they didn’t arrive in Noorvik around 10 p.m. Thursday as expected. Troopers reported the weather Thursday night was cloudy and calm around the Kotzebue area.
The U.S. Coast Guard and Northwest Arctic Borough launched a search and rescue effort for the overdue vessel, troopers said. Searchers found the 16-foot Lund skiff that the pair left in at about 1:30 p.m. Friday, overturned in the river. Their bodies were discovered approximately one mile apart about 11 miles downriver from Noorvik, according to troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel. Black wore a life jacket and Coffin did not.
Noorvik, a mainly Iñupiat community of about 635 people, is one of the largest communities in the Northwest Arctic Borough and is located nearly 50 miles east of Kotzebue.
