KUALA LUMPUR: While many eager to know when the 15th General Election will be held, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has tempered their enthusiasm, saying that a discussion with the Prime Minister is needed to determine the best time.
The Barisan Nasional chairman said it had been four years since the last general election in 2018, meaning that the next polls could be held anytime now.
"What is important is for Barisan to be fully prepared. That is our responsibility before facing the polls. We must be ready to ensure that we win," he said at the Barisan Nasional Convention on Wednesday . Asking the floor if they want elections as soon as possible this year and, he got a resounding yes and applause in response. The current Parliament term ends in June next year.
The Government and Pakatan Harapan leaders had signed an agreement on bipartisan cooperation and political stability last year, which among others, called for Parliament not to be dissolved before July 31, 2022 to allow for political stability. However, Umno, which is the biggest component party in Barisan – has been pushing for the general election to be called.
