The Blue Jackets got off to a good start to their season, but Patrik Laine's injury was the beginning of a tumble against the Carolina Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. — Things couldn't have gone much better for the Blue Jackets through the first 25 minutes of their season-opener Wednesday at PNC Arena and then fell apart after star forward Patrik Laine left with an injury in the second period.

— Laine left the game three shifts after his goal, exiting at 6:45 of the second after a hit by Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesce. Laine left the game and didn’t return because of an upper-body injury, forcing the Blue Jackets to finish the game with 11 forwards. After struggling to gain entry into the Carolina zone, Cole Sillinger took matters into his own hands and attempted a solo entry through defenseman Brent Burns and forward Martin Necas parked outside the Hurricanes’ blue line. At live speed, he somehow squirted the puck through both players, collected it and ripped a wrist shot to the short side that beat Andersen for an apparent go-ahead goal to make it 2-1.

— The Blue Jackets got too sloppy with the puck in their own end to start the third and finally paid a price for it when Necas made it 3-1 at 6:29 with a goal directly off a turnover by Blue Jackets defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov. The goal capped a sequence in which the Blue Jackets just couldn't clear the puck from their own end. Tarasov made a nice save on Jordan Martinook, but couldn't get over in time to stop Necas' snap shot off the loose puck.

— The Blue Jackets loaned rookie forward Kent Johnson to the Monsters to create a roster spot for Greaves.
