Blue\u002Dgreen algae (cynobacteria) can cause illness in humans and symptoms are more pronounced in children.
Blue-green algae occurs naturally, and can look like scum, grass clippings, fuzz or globs on the water surface, and can be blue-green, greenish-brown, brown or pinkish-red, with a musty or grassy smell, according to a SHA media release.
Someone who comes into contact with blue-green algae or ingests water that contains it may experience skin irritation, rash sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, the SHA said. Symptoms can appear one to three hours after contact or ingestion and resolve in one or two days, with symptoms in children often being more pronounced.
People living near the shores of the lake and visitors are being asked to avoid all contact with the blue-green algae blooms, and if contact occurs they are advised to wash with tap water as soon as possible. The public is also advised not to swim or wade or to allow their pets to swim or wade in any areas where they can see blue-green algae.
Residents are also being advised not to use untreated water directly from recreational bodies of water like Little Manitou Lake for drinking or for cooking, since boiling the water won’t remove the blue-green algae toxins. The SHA said weather and wind conditions can cause the blooms to move from one location in the lake to another, so the advisory will remain in effect for Little Manitou Lake until further notice.
