Black and Native women had highest risk of maternal death in past 2 decades: Study

Researchers estimated maternal mortality rates — which includes the death of women occurring up to one year after the end of pregnancy per 100,000 live births — from 1999 to 2019. MORE ⬇️

Maternal mortality rates doubled for every race and ethnicity in the past two decades, according to a new modeling study.

“Maternal mortality persists as a source of worsening disparities in many U.S. states and prevention efforts during this study period appear to have had a limited impact in addressing this health crisis,” the authors wrote in the new analysis. A myriad of issues could contribute to the alarming rates, including underlying health conditions people have going into pregnancy.
