Maternal mortality rates doubled for every race and ethnicity in the past two decades, according to a new modeling study.

Experts aren’t entirely sure why maternal mortality rates have risen so dramatically.

A myriad of issues could contribute to the alarming rates, including underlying health conditions people have going into pregnancy. “If you just look at health outcomes in America, you know that most chronic diseases are seen in African American communities and so when you have some of these diseases, namely hypertension, diabetes and obesity, that are present before pregnancy, those are also going to be, what we would say comorbidities, that are going to impact the maternal mortality rate,” she added.

“And that is going to cause maybe mistrust or people missing appointments or not going to their appointments or maybe even the messaging and what's going on with management,” she adds.
