The court heard Terence Kelly - the man who pleaded guilty to kidnapping then four-year-old Cleo Smith - got angry at her when 'she was getting bossy and asking for chocolate'.
Terence Darrell Kelly - the man who admitted to kidnapping then four-year-old Cleo Smith and holding her captive for 18 days - told police"she was a bit of a fighter".
The little girl's disappearance, which made headlines around the world, led to one of the most extensive searches in Australian police history. The judge read out parts of Kelly's statement after his arrest, telling police the young victim"never went outside, she pleaded to go to her parents" and"she asked mainly for her mum".
In his statement, Kelly said Cleo cried a"fair bit" as she was held captive. Kelly attempted to tie her up with sticky tape but it was not working. He also got angry at her when she was"getting bossy and asking for chocolate". Following his arrest, Kelly told police"I wanted to hold onto her but I knew it was wrong" and"I wasn't planning on keeping her forever, you know?".
Western Australia Police Commissioner Col Blanch praised police, emergency services and the Carnarvon community for supporting authorities over the 18 days in a powerful statement. "Early on in my career I actually spoke to a father of a victim of a serious crime, and he said to me, 'As a dad, a million years isn't enough'. And that's driven by emotion and as a father I understand that and I would expect the community would never think that 13 and a half years is enough," he said.
