Then a sophomore at Ensley High School, Johnny Lockett Jr. had left his grandmother’s house and was headed home to meet his father’s curfew when he discovered an hours-old baby boy that had been left to die in a trash bin. “I didn’t understand why a person would abandon an innocent child,’’ Lockett said.
It was Easter Sunday 32 years ago that Johnny Lockett Jr. made a shocking discovery, a memory that stays with him always, and especially each year on this holiday.
“On this day, Easter Sunday 1990, a baby was born, lost and found. Everybody stop what you’re are doing and wish Peter Chance a Happy Birthday,’’ Lockett wrote. “Wherever he is, I would like to reunite with him someday.” “My dad had talked to me about changing my route because gang violence about that time was bad,’’ he said. “Being hard-headed, I took the normal path and as I entered the alleyway behind Marino’s Grocery and Advance Auto Parts, I heard like a cat whine.”
“Then I started to get a little upset because I didn’t understand why someone would do this to a child that didn’t ask to be brought into this world,’’ he said. “I looked to the Heavens and asked God, “What should I do?” It seemed like an eternity, but it was only minutes, and that child was just calm and content.”
The baby was placed in a special nursery at Children’s Hospital and made a splash in the news, but what became of him remains unknown.“That child has always been on my mind,’’ he said. “I tell the story to my sons and let them know how much that situation humbled me and affected me spiritually.”
