We chat with BrosMovie stars billyeichner & Luke Macfarlane about the dimensions of their characters, the process of writing the script, and how Bros' Bobby Leiber is like Holly Hunter in Broadcast News:

Co-written by beloved comedian Billy Eichner, Bros is aiming to revitalize the classic romcoms of the past and tell a story authentic to the LGBTQ+ community. Eichner stars in the new comedy, out in theaters on September 30, as a driven, high-strung, and history-obsessed man on the brink of making big moves in the world.

Nick walked me through the process of making a major studio comedy, and I taught him about gay culture in order to make the movie as authentic as possible, which was very important to me. We've had a lot of movies and shows which walk on eggshells around the gay characters' lives, or maybe were not as multi-dimensional as we could be or should be. I really wanted this to be the exception to that, and it was a beautiful collaboration at the end of the day.

I was incredibly grateful that it was all on the page there for me, and that they were so receptive to ideas that I was able to insert in very small ways. I loved Moonstruck, When Harry Met Sally, Annie Hall, Working Girl, and Tootsie. Broadcast news is probably my favorite; I really love Holly Hunter's character in that movie. She was actually a big inspiration for my character in Bros, just in terms of being very capable at her job, very outspoken, extremely confident, thinking and knowing—probably rightfully so—that she's the smartest person in the room.
