The Buffalo Bills decision on annoucing a starting middle linebacker remains unsettled as the team prepares to close its preseason schedule at Chicago on Saturday.
McDermott, on Thursday, sidestepped a question on whether he’s behind schedule in announcing a starter by saying: “The important thing right now is where we’re trying to go. I thought the middle linebackers had a good day yesterday, and that’s got to continue to move forward.”In assessing positional competitions on Aug. 10, McDermott said there were some battles where he wished a player had begun to separate himself, without specifically mentioning middle linebacker.
McDermott is taking the unusual step of having quarterback Josh Allen and his starters play against Chicago, though he wouldn’t say for how long. That’s a departure from the past, where McDermott traditionally sat his starters in the final preseason game. Replacing Edmunds was never going to be easy once it became evident the salary cap-strapped Bills were not going to be able to afford him. The 25-year-old’s contract with the Bears is worth $72 million over four years with $50 million guaranteed.
