City of Saskatoon general manager of community services Lynne Lacroix said council requested and wrote to the province for the legislation to be amended. The plan now for Saskatoon is to prepare a report to go back to council with formal, public information about the change in legislation and what has happened in other municipalities. From there, council can direct the administration to move forward with a bylaw change or it can seek public feedback.
Municipalities will have to pass a bylaw amending the rules for the community. For the time being, it is status quo until the new ordinance is passed. “Before we take any bylaw forward to administration, we will want to be consulting with the public and get their opinions and feedback on whether they want it,” Schroeder said, adding
“We weren’t in favour of ramming through legislation at the last minute. We really believed that consultation should take place,” he said. “It might be normalized but it’s still not legal in public places. That will still be enforced,” Carr said.
