Shaker Square has lost another retail tenant.
One of several franchised Biggby's Coffee shops in Northeast Ohio, the Biggby's at Shaker Square has closed.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Biggby Coffee at 13201 Shaker Square, Cleveland, closed at the end of 2022. The chain had taken over the space vacated by Dewey’s Coffee in May 2019. Dewey’s closed after 15 years when the owner Dewey Forward retired.
Biggby Coffee is a chain based in East Lansing, Michigan. Several franchises are still open in the Greater Cleveland and Akron areas. A conversation on one Facebook page speculated on reasons for closing, with some customers lamenting the loss. One noted: “That stinks. We have a local Biggby and although they are a chain, they are locally owned. The owners are cool letting it be a place to meet or hang out. A lot better than the other big chain.”
Biggby’s is the latest in a string of closures in the struggling, historic Cleveland shopping center. In 2020, during the pandemic, restaurants Fire Food & Drink and Yours Truly both closed. With many unleased spaces, the square is now in the hands of a non-profit.
