The NCOP has passed the Constitutional Eighteenth Amendment Bill onto President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The National Council of Provinces has approved the amendment of section 6 of the Consitution to make South African Sign Language an official language – taking it one step closer to being a reality.
According to Parliament, the amendment is to include SASL as an official language to promote the rights of persons who are deaf and hard of hearing. On top of that, it aims to promote inclusive and substantive equality and prevent or eliminate unfair discrimination on the ground of disability, as guaranteed by section 9 of the Constitution.
