“She is a teacher, without exception. She puts the kids first, and they know she is there for them,” said Dr. Vinni Biancalana, the school’s principal, who nominated Andrea Woods.

Woods teaches 4th grade reading, writing, language arts, math, science, social studies, and 2nd step Social Emotional curriculum at the Big Hollow Elementary School in Ingleside. She has also been selected as a 2023 finalist for the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching, one of only thirty nominated statewide.
Giving individualized help with certain curriculum tasks builds relationships and student confidence in their own abilities. “She was saying that the class came to her as family, and watching her teach, I understand,” said Bob Gold, the district’s superintendent. “She has the ability to build those relationships with the kids, and help build them with each other. The class does seem like a family, the kids are pretty tight, and I think that’s her strength.”
