Witnesses have described hearing a big bang before a navy helicopter with 10 ADF personnel onboard crashed on the NSW South Coast.

ACT Police and rescue helicopters were called to the scene near Jervis Bay at 9:10pm on Wednesday, after witnesses had seen sparks and heard a loud explosion.

While the cause of the incident remains unclear, onlookers described hearing an explosion and rotors slowing down before the helicopter crashed into the water.
