Big cheers to Matthew Beers and team for keeping the Absa Cape Epic title in Mzansi

South African mountain bike star Matthew Beers and his American teammate, Howard Grotts, won the 2024 Absa Cape Epic mountain bike competition that ended in Stellenbosch on 24 March. Photo: @capeepicelite men's title remained on these shores, when he and his American teammate, Howard Grotts, claimed the 20th edition of the popular mountain bike race on Sunday.

Despite a third place finish in the grand finale of the 67km long Stage 7, Beers and Grott did enough to make the podium to bag the overall title in a competition whose field was dominated by European competitors. The pair, riding for Toyota Specialized-Ninety-One, got into the race with their tails up after claiming the yellow jersey as the winners of stages five and six, but they found competition tough on the final stage of the eight-day cycling event.

They surrendered the lead to eventual Stage 7 winners, the Bull Mavericks team made up of German Simon Schneller and his Swiss teammate, Urs Huber, who completed the race in two hours 58 minutes and eight seconds.
