President Biden traveled to Dover Air Force Base Sunday to receive the remains of the 13 service members killed in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON—President Biden traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Sunday to meet with families of the 13 service members killed in Afghanistan and was to participate in a dignified transfer of their remains.

Mr. Biden and his wife, Jill, met privately Sunday morning with families before the solemn moment in which troops take flag-draped transfer cases off an aircraft. The 13 service members wereand Mr. Biden called them “heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our highest American ideals and while saving the lives of others.”

Some of the family members have been critical of Mr. Biden’s withdrawal plan, which has raised questions from lawmakers in both parties. The president has pushed for a withdrawal by Aug. 31, saying the country shouldn’t risk more loss in a nearly 20-year war. The oldest of the service members killed was 31 and the most common age among them was 20. Some of the Americans were infants on Sept. 11, 2001, when al Qaeda operatives hijacked four planes and attacked New York, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania, leading to the U.S. invasion into Afghanistan a month later.

Mr. Biden warned Saturday that another attack in Kabul was highly likely as the U.S. rushed to complete the withdrawal by Aug. 31. National security adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday on CNN that about 300 Americans remain to be evacuated. Thousands of troops also must be evacuated along with equipment.
