comments about Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats are “reckless,” but a White House rep insisted they simply reflect the “high stakes” in Ukraine.
President Biden said the risk of nuclear “Armageddon” is at its highest level since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.“So the president, I think, was accurately reflecting the fact that the stakes are very high right now,” he told host Martha Raddatz. “When you hear a president talking about Armageddon as a random thought just musing at a fundraiser, that is a terrible risk to the American people,” Mike Pompeo commented.“Nor have we seen anything that would give us pause to reconsider our own strategic nuclear posture in our efforts to defend our own national security interests and those of our allies and partners,” Kirby said.
John Kirby said the president’s remarks are not an indication that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s finger is on the nuclear trigger.Pompeo, in the Fox interview, dismissed Biden comparing Putin with the then-Soviet Union deploying nuclear-armed ballistic missiles in Cuba during the Cold War.
