El gobierno del presidente Joe Biden ha aprobado la primera transferencia militar de Estados Unidos a Taiwán bajo un programa de ayuda generalmente reservado a las naciones independientes soberanas.
El Departamento de Estado notificó al Congreso el miércoles. Dijo que el material será “utilizado para fortalecer la capacidad de autodefensa de Taiwán a través de una capacidad de defensa conjunta y combinada y el conocimiento acentuado del dominio marítimo y la capacidad de seguridad marítima”.
Pero las ventas previas de armas a Taiwán han sido aprobadas bajo otras disposiciones que no implican necesariamente su reconocimiento como Estado. Funcionarios estadounidenses se apresuraron a señalar que la financiación bajo el programa FMF no representa un cambio de política, algo con lo que los chinos seguramente no estarán de acuerdo.
