That same night, just a few dozen miles away in Brooklyn, 28-year-old O’Shae Sibley was pronounced dead at Maimonides Medical Center. Sibley, a dancer who studied at the Ailey Extension, and a group of friends had stopped at a gas station and were voguing while blasting Beyoncé’salbum when another group allegedly confronted them. The altercation became physical and resulted in Sibley’s being stabbed in the chest, a wound that caused his death.
The simple statement is a powerful gesture from the performer, bringing attention to the crime and the cruel contrast of the night. While Balenciaga was met with the cheers of thousands for her dancing, Sibley, his friend“They hated us cause we are gay! Screaming we Muslim and we don’t like gays!!!!! As we are innocently pumping gas and y’all decided to stab one of us!!!”
