Betty Gilpin opened up about the canceled GLOW season 4 and has hopes that it may properly conclude one day. 'I was super sad we didn’t get to finish out season 4. Maybe someday something will happen...'

Betty Gilpin opens up about Netflix's surprise decision to cancel GLOW season 4. Taking place in 1980s Los Angeles, GLOW follows struggling actress Ruth Wilder , who joins an up-and-coming female wrestling show called Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling . Not long after joining GLOW, Ruth finds herself at odds with Debbie , a former friend she had a falling out with after she had an affair with Debbie's husband.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Netflix announced in the fall of 2019 that it had renewed GLOW for a fourth and final season, which would enter production in 2020. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, however, production on season 4, which had been underway for 3 weeks, was shut down. In a surprise reversal of their earlier decision, Netflix announced in October 2020 that GLOW season 4 was canceled, much to the dismay of many fans and the show's stars.

“I mean, those three years were pretty f---ing magic. And, yeah, I was super sad we didn’t get to finish out season 4. Maybe someday something will happen. But it was 2020, and the lessons à la The Hunt, society crumbling, I just didn’t want to seem tone-deaf, ringing a bell in the town square saying, ‘the most devastating part of March 2020 is that a TV show got canceled in the fourth season.’ I just felt like, super protective of, I don’t know, the world.

When the pandemic really took hold in March 2020, GLOW was far from the only production to shut down. Hollywood productions all over the world, including Mission: Impossible 7, Elvis, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, were impacted by the onset of COVID-19 and forced to temporarily shut down filming.

Gilpin's comment about not wanting to seem tone-deaf is an admirable approach to GLOW's cancelation, especially considering how many people were being seriously affected by COVID-19 around the world. While the circumstances of Netflix's decision to cancel GLOW were certainly extreme, the streamer has earned something of a reputation for canceling beloved shows early, which include Sense8, Bloodline, and, of course, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher.
