When Julie Castle was driving through Utah on her way to law school 27 years ago, she took a little detour in Kanab, and she has been there ever since.
Castle just fell in love with the beauty of the area and decided to stay. She took a job as one of 17 employees at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
When the organization started, there were 45,000 animals dying every year in Utah, which is a phenomenal number. Utah only has 11 shelters out of 59 that still kill animals.
