The 1997 film was the first major breakthrough for Affleck and Damon, who wrote the script together and starred in the film, with Damon playing the titular Will Hunting and Affleck portraying his pal Chuckie Sullivan. Affleck and Damon also won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for their work on the film.

The hardscrabble, gritty originality that made the Good Will Hunting script so good might be difficult to replicate now following years of sustained success.
