The Belmont Stakes would be run June 20, but without fans in attendance.
The non-traditional Triple Crown for horse racing this year was fully realized Tuesday when the New York Racing Association announced that the Belmont Stakes would be run June 20 -- nearly three months before the Kentucky Derby -- and at a much shorter distance of 1 1/8 miles.
"While this will certainly be a unique running of this historic race, we are grateful to be able to hold the Belmont Stakes in 2020," O'Rourke said. But finding a date for the Belmont to keep the Triple Crown races in order was always going to be tricky, as the primary goal for most horse owners and trainers in the fall is the Breeders' Cup on Nov. 6 and 7, which offers a $7 million purse for the Classic. Having the $1 million Belmont in late October or November race, meaning horses couldn't run in both races, would not make sense under those circumstances.
